A 24-year-old man conman was today arrested for allegedly cheating over 15 widows and devdasi with the promise of getting them money from the funds separately allocated for them by the government.
The accused Ajay Sen, a resident of Malwani, was arrested from his residence on charges of cheating. According to the police, Sen used to approach widows and devdasis telling them that the government had a separate funds for them and he would help them claim the money.
Sen also issued fake identity cards to the victims and assured them that they would soon receive their money, police said adding he had also charged the victim service fee anything between Rs 2000-Rs 5000 from them.
To gain the confidence of the victims, Sen had forged documents of an existing non-governmental organisation in Ghatkopar that worked for widows and the devdasis and posed as an activist with the NGO, an official from Malwani police station said.
As the victims did not receive money even after months passed, they went to the NGO where they learnt that they were duped, police said. Subsequently, the victim and the NGO complained to them, police said adding Sen was apprehended today and further probe was on.
