Constable gets bail in fake encounter case

Police constable Devidas Sakpal became the first policeman to get bail in the infamous Lakkhan Bhaiyya fake encounter case on Wednesday.

Police constable Devidas Sakpal became the first policeman to get bail in the infamous Lakkhan Bhaiyya fake encounter case on Wednesday. The high-profile case has seen some of the city’s top police officers, including encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, put behind bars.

Sakpal was accused of being in the police team that carried out the encounter. “The court has granted bail to Sakpal,” confirmed special prosecutor RN Mishra.

Advocate Ram Prasad Gupta, Lakkan Bhaiiya’s brother, said, “We will go through the entire (bail) order and then decide about challenging it in the Bombay High Court.”

Ram Narayan Gupta alias Lakkhan Bhaiyya was killed in a police encounter on November 11, 2006, near Nana Nani Park in Versova. Following which, his brother — advocate Ram Prasad Gupta — filed a petition in the Bombay High Court on November 15, 2006, alleging that his Lakkhan Bhaiyya was murdered by police officers in a fake encounter.

The Bombay High Court in February 2008 ordered a magisterial inquiry into the alleged fake encounter, and in August 2009, the magistrate submitted a report to the high court stating that Lakkhan Bhaiyya was killed indeed killed in a fake encounter.
