The Thane police have arrested a criminal 14 years after he broke parole and escaped. Suresh Vaity, 55, was caught by Naupada police on Thursday while shopping in city markets.
Vaity was serving a life sentence at Thane Central jail.
He was released on parole in 1998 for 90 days after which he disappeared. The persistent police, however, managed to catch him after more than 14 years. Vaity was a resident of Bhiwandi.
JD More, senior inspector of Naupada police station said, “He was caught by assistant inspector Ashok Kadllak, who was earlier in Bhiwandi. He had heard about the escaped convict, Vaity, who had been serving a life sentence for double murder. He had killed two people in a labour union fight in 1979.”
“He was caught the same year and sentenced in 1995. He was released on parole for 90 days in 1998 and was missing since then,” he added.
Kadllak said, “One of my informers told me Vaity was seen in Naupada, Thane (W). We spotted him and caught him. He has been sent to Thane jail where he will be completing his sentence.”
