A police sub-inspector has been suspended for filing a rape case without verifying the facts of the case, or notifying a higher officer.
The Thane police commissioner suspended DH Bhadane, attached to the central police station, Ulhasnagar on Monday.
Inspector Sanjay Surve, from the central police station, said that on August 22, a 27-year-old woman came to the police station and lodged a rape case against one Hira Bullani, 47.
“Bhadane took up the case immediately and sent a team to arrest Bullani. However, before doing so, he did not consult a higher officer, or verify the facts of the case. Two days later, when the police spoke to the supposed victim, she gave a different statement. The witnesses she named were also weak and the medical reports could not confirm rape.”
Surve added that the police sent a report to Shivajirao Rathod, the deputy commissioner of police, Ulhasnagar, who took the matter forward with Thane commissioner KP Raghuvanshi. Raghuvanshi subsequently suspended Bhadane.
Defending himself, Bhadane said: “A policeman has to register each and every complaint and has no right to deny it. I acted as per the rules, but officers have objected to the fact that I did not inform them, as it was a serious offence.”
