Investigations into the murder of senior journalist J Dey seem to be heading towards a breakthrough with the police closing in on the killers.

Sources in the police told the Hindustan Times that they had managed to crack the password of one of Dey’s email accounts on Friday. After scanning around 3,000 mails, the investigators narrowed down on five that were saved in the draft folder.

“Those mails contain stories [exposes] and photographs which he [Dey] was preparing to publish. These gave the investigators a clear picture about who would be affected if these stories were published,” a source said.

The password was cracked with the help of IT professionals and a few ethical hackers.

Special teams dispatched to Gujarat, Silvassa and a neighbouring southern state have detained suspects for questioning, sources said. The suspects are reportedly linked to the red sanders smuggling syndicate.

Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, crime, said the investigation had established a “professional angle” to the murder. When questioned about the emails, Roy said, “We have found some indications [about the probable killers] in five-six mails and are working on them before narrowing in on the suspects. It is too early to arrive at any conclusion.”
