“One of the residents had seen the duo lingering around the building gate 90 minutes before the incident. He called up the police control room but the police reached late,” said Jeetendra Singh, a resident of the area.

The assailants had been scouting the society, which houses 16 buildings, for the last four days, the locals alleged. Inspector Sangeeta Patil confirmed that someone had called the police, but refused to comment.

Witnesses said the Fayaz Khan (28) and Rakesh Parve (28) entered the building from two different gates and one of them shot at Bhandari, a dealer in music compact discs.

After watchman Shailendra Misra, shouted for help, the duo started running but the locals chased them. “They (accused) fired once in the air,” said Misra. Witnesses said one of the accused fell after being hit by another watchman, Viru Dubey.
