Former city police commissioner Hasan Gafoor, now chief of the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation (MSPHWC), now has to explain the poor performance of the agency for the period when it was headed by his predecessors.

Taking serious note of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s reports that the MSPHWC did not utilise Rs 100.27 crore in funds received for 33 projects under housing, building, city and state plans from 2001 to 2006, the government has ordered an inquiry.
“We have asked the department (Home) to inquire about the CAG report,” Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe told reporters at his Mantralaya office on Wednesday. “We would like to know the reasons for the inordinate delay.”
Gafoor, who took over as MSPHWC chief in June this year, could not be reached for comment.
The latest CAG report said the projects were still only at the planning or tender stage till June 2008.
Housing has been a major problem area for the police, with half the city’s constabulary living in slums.
Several dilapidated matchbox-sized police quarters are no longer structurally fit — they either need repairs or need to be demolished to make way for new buildings.
