“What the policemen did was wrong. They went overboard,” said R.K. Padmanabhan, additional commissioner of police (south region), a day after policemen paraded two bag snatchers and a robber near Crawford Market.

On Wednesday, LT Marg police paraded Mahender Burju, Juman Azim Sheikh and Ganesh Jagtap with slates displaying their names, charges and crime registration numbers, suspended from their necks and their hands tied on the streets of Zaveri Bazaar and Cotton Exchange.

Padmanabhan said robbers are usually paraded so that if they are seen in the area later the shopkeepers can identify them. “The robbers were taken to identify the spot but the way in which they were taken was a mistake. An inquiry against Senior Inspector A. P. Borude has been ordered which will be dealt with by the deputy commissioner of police zone I,” he added.

“We did this because we wanted the shopowners to identify the robbers and tell us whether they were involved in other cases,” said an officer from LT Marg police station requesting anonymity.
