Suburban commuters on the harbour and main lines were greatly inconvenienced on Sunday because of the mega block enforced by Central Railway (CR) between Kalyan-Thane and Kurla-Mankhrud, to carry out routine maintenance work.

On the main line, all slow services leaving Kalyan were diverted to the fast corridor between Kalyan and Mulund stations from 10.13 am to 3.11 pm. As a result, there were no services at Thakurli, Kopar, Diva, Mumbra and Kalwa stations and commuters were forced to travel either to Dombivli or Thane.
“It’s a problem we face regularly. Generally, I take a very crowded train to Dombivli and then go from there to Parel. If I’m in a hurry, I hire an auto to go to Dombivli and take a CST train,” said Nilesh Gawade, software engineer and Diva resident.
The harbour line block between Kurla and Mankhurd troubled residents of Navi Mumbai who had to commute in state transport (ST) buses or in crammed BEST buses. During the block period services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Panvel, Belapur and Vashi remained suspended.
“The block on harbour line is a routine phenomenon, so ST or BEST should at least increase the number of buses plying in the affected areas,” said Amit Parab, 25, a Nerul resident.
