The addition means the city traffic police now have 35 outposts. While five extra police outposts were added in the western suburbs, two were added in the south Mumbai and three in the central and eastern suburbs, said an officer.

“Previously, each traffic outpost covered at least four police stations but following the new arrangement, it will be easier to carry out the duties assigned to the traffic police personnel,” said Panjabrao Ugale, deputy commissioner of police, traffic.

Sources said the decision was taken by Milind Bharambe, who took over as the joint commissioner of police, traffic.

Senior officials said the strength of the force has also been increased to man the new outposts. The new setup helps the traffic department, which was until now facing a severe staff crunch. A single traffic outpost will approximately cover the jurisdiction of two city police stations, Ugale added.

Apart from upgrading the force, the police are also taking some stringent steps to crackdown on illegal bikers. With increasing complaints against bikers disturbing peace at night, the traffic police began studying the patterns and identified various spots frequented by the motorcyclists.

The traffic policemen have also intensified patrolling in the area along with the police.

Inspector Vijayalakhsmi Hiremath, in-charge at Bandra traffic outpost, said, “After receiving a distress call from a resident, a police patrol van is dispatched to the spot. Action is taken against the rogue bikers on a regular basis.”
