The Mumbai traffic police plan to initiate a drive across the city to crackdown on bikers, who break the prescribed sound and speed barriers. On Tuesday, they organised such a drive at JJ flyover in south Mumbai and fined 50 bikers.
“Only last year, we organised a 15-day long drive in the city when we caught 15,000 offenders. Some of them were fined under the Motor Vehicles Act while motorbikes were seized in some cases. We plan to conduct the drive again and it will be randomly organised so that offenders are caught off guard,” said Vivek Phansalkar, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
This move, the traffic police said, comes after the successful launch of a similar campaign in zone 2 of south Mumbai. It led to the arrest of at least 11 bikers while cases of rash and negligent driving were registered against six offenders. Also, a total of 101 bikers were fined under the MV Act.
“We organised nakabandis along two major stretches in south Mumbai — Marine drive and Girgaum chowpatty,” said Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police (zone 2).
The offenders, Kumbhare said, were largely not residents of south Mumbai and belonged to places such as Thane, Mumbra and Chembur. “They get rid of the silencers in the bikes and create a nuisance. It was after we received complaints from residents of the zone that we decided to start the drive,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}Indrani Malkhani, secretary, Malabar Hill residents association, said even though the drive came as a relief, it can’t be sustained. “The cops cannot monitor everyone at all times. There has to be some self-regulation.”
