Angered by allegations of a custodial assault case against police officers being investigated by policemen of the same police station, the Bombay High Court has transferred the probe to the crime investigation department (CID).
“How can officers of a police station investigate allegations of custodial assault levelled against officers of the same police station?” asked justice AM Khanwilkar. He directed that an officer not below the rank of deputy superintendent of police should investigate the case and submit a report by November 29.
The police had even registered an offence against Sunil Kale for attempting to commit suicide inside the lock-up.
A division bench of justice Khanwilkar and justice PD Kode has kept the trial against Kale in the suicide attempt case on hold.
Sunil Kale, facing trial in six robbery cases, had sent a petition through Yerawada jail in Pune where he is lodged, alleging that he was assaulted by officers at Daund police station on October 28, 2009.
