The garden, which was once known for holding political meetings, has been neglected for a long time and was encroached upon by locals.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun the beautification of the over 30,000 sq ft garden and is expecting to finish it by May.

The garden which also doubles up as a traffic island will be leveled with red sand, a walking track, seating arrangements, a play area for children, bollard lighting, a gazebo and fencing.

“The garden was used by locals to conduct meetings, so to continue that we have planned the gazebo,” said Narayan Pai, assistant municipal commissioner, G-north ward office. The budget is Rs 1.9 crore.

“Over the years, locals and anti-social elements have destroyed the fence wall, so it is as good as constructing everything again,” added Pai.

“The garden is in ruins, making it a haven for illegal activities. It’s good the civic body has decided to re-do it,” said Harshvardan Apte, a resident of Shivaji Park area.

Mayor Shraddha Jadhav has asked BMC to take police help to remove the encroachers.
