Mumbai University officials are taking steps to ensure Saturday’s third-year BCom paper goes off better than the first paper on Thursday, which was hit by delays, question paper shortages and supervision issues.

A combination of the teachers’ exam boycott and technical problems meant the exam started late in some centres, while in others there weren’t enough question papers. University officials said they were working to ensure Saturday’s BCom exams are conducted without a hitch.

“There were some hiccups on Thursday and we are developing a contingency plan,” said Naresh Chandra, pro vice-chancellor of the university. “We will ensure additional papers reach centres where there was a shortage and we are working on the web link [for question papers].”

Chandra refuted teachers’ allegations of mass copying in some centres, and said action would not be taken without solid proof.

Protesting teachers have alleged that haphazard conduct of exams has compromised transparency, fairness and merit. “They are only interested in conducting exams and not the quality of conducting exams,” said CR Sadasivan, president, Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union.
