The previous record was held by an 8.5cm stone that made it to the Limca book of records. Doctors at the Nerul hospital claim that this is the largest ureteric stone that has been removed in Asia.

The surgery was conducted by a team led by Dr Sandesh Deolekar, the head of department and included Dr Sangram Karandikar, Dr R Ambardekar, Dr Manish Tardeja, Dr Vikash Lal, Dr Lokesh Sridharan and Dr Khizer Doctor.

The patient had been suffering from pain in his abdomen for the past five years, but had been taking treatment without any in-depth diagnosis or investigation. A month ago, he came to DY Patil hospital, where a CT scan revealed the enormous ureteric stone.

Dr Deolekar said, “The patient had acute pain in left loin along with a burning sensation. Investigation revealed that the left kidney was hardly functioning and that there was a giant ureteric stone.”
