On June 11, the state rejected in writing the demand of affected students to consider them through the state quota instead of the all-India quota.

This is the first year of the allIndia National Eligibility-cum Entrance Exam Test for Post Graduates (NEET-PG), and foreign-returned MBBS graduates, who appeared for it, were given an all-India rank and a state rank.

However, though they are registered with the Medical Council of India and are licensed to practise in state hospitals, they can’t avail the state quota.

Last month, an association of students wrote to the medical education department, but was told on Tuesday that their demand had been denied.

“We are all domicile citizens of Maharashtra. If we are allowed to practise in the state, there is no valid reason to deny us a postgraduation seat through the state quota,” said a letter from the

The association said around 200 students had been affected this year. “Other states allow their domiciles to apply through the state quota. Why isn’t Maharashtra doing the same?” said one affected doctor.

“These students are eligible through the national quota, the state quota is only for those who studied in the state,” said Dr Pravin Shingare, of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER).
