Doctors to challenge Vision 2015

Vision 2015, a proposal to reform medical education in the country, was uploaded on MCI’s official website in December. It aims to increase the number of seats in medical colleges to bring the doctor:population ratio from the present 1:1700 to 1:1000 by 2031.

However, after studying the proposal, city doctors and their counterparts across the country have decided to challenge it in court. Nationwide protests were held on Saturday.

“We were not intimated about such a plan. The proposal to change the entire health system of the country is put up by an eight-member team. The team wants to allow one exam at the end of the four-year MBBS course. This will burden the students, said Dr Sailesh Mohite, head, forensic department at Nair Hospital. For post-graduate students, the changes would mean that they would have to crunch one and a half years’ learning in eight months.

Mohite said the team has recommended that freshers, who begin working at hospitals after a year of studying, should begin working from day one.
