A day after veteran crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey was shot dead by four men on motorcycles in Powai, the police investigation appears to be centred around a set of documents found in his bag.

The documents are believed to hold the key to his murder."The papers are in our possession and we are scrutinising them," said Deven Bharati, additional commissioner of police, crime.

Just moments before he was gunned down on Saturday, Dey had made photocopies of some of these papers and handed them over to an unidentified man near the D Mart supermarket in Powai, police said.

"We cannot talk about them," said Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli.

The police are also going through Dey's cellphone records of the past one month.

"It will give us information on who he spoke to last," an official said.

"We are also trying to figure out the places he visited before the incident through cellphone tower records of the locations," the official added.
