The incident came to light after one of the girls got pregnant. The family members of the girl registered a police complaint against the accused after finding out about the incident.

An officer from the Powai police station, talking on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to talk to the media, said: “Shanta Gaikwad, 40, who works as a domestic help at various households in Powai, had started a small racket. She would work for some of her employers on a commission basis and supply them young girls from the area.”

He added, “Gaikwad would lure poor girls from her locality and would tempt them with money and ask them not to tell their family members about their deal.” One of the girls supplied by Gaikwad to her employers got pregnant and that is when the incident came to light.

The officer said, “The girl tried to conceal her condition but her family members came to know about it. She was initially hesitant to tell them as she was scared. However, she later told them about the accused. We have arrested the domestic help and suspect she is involved in a few more such cases.”
