Even as crime against women is on the rise in the city, Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh said on Monday that the low rate of conviction in rape cases could be attributed to false complaints and complainants turning hostile during trial.
“Police cannot be blamed for the low conviction rate in rape cases as sometimes, the complainant turns hostile during trial… we also have to deal with false complaints,” Singh said on the sidelines of a function organised in Andheri (West) where prominent Bollywood personalities were urged to depict policemen in a positive light in films and pay special attention to the way women were portrayed.
“In almost 56% of rape cases, the complainants turn hostile as the perpetrators are members of their own family. False cases of rape are also registered, but we are ensuring that every case is investigated thoroughly, at the DCP level,” Singh added.
Singh said that a policeman’s job is difficult because on one hand, they are combatting terrorism, while on the other, they are trying to make the city safe for women.
“The movies, as they communicate, can help us make the city safe and bring peace and harmony to the city,” he added. Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy, who also attended the event, said “We met senior members of the film industry and had a dialogue with them on how they can help us make the city safer.”
