Drunk constable kills 87-yr-old

A police head constable allegedly killed an 87-year-old man on Saturday in the Naupada area of Thane. Ravi Parab, 45, killed Waman Madhvi on a vacant plot that the latter owned near Teen petrol pump. Susamma Kurian reports.

The Naupada police station registered a case of murder against the constable, who is currently attached to the anti-extortion cell.

Eyewitnesses say Parab was drunk and was still drinking when Madhvi came by for a routine check of his plot. Parab was sitting under a tree and Madhvi joined him. The two then began to discuss something. Suddenly, Parab picked up a rock and hit him on his head twice.

“The eyewitnesses tried to catch Parab but he escaped. One of them then called up Madhvi’s nephew and they took him to the Thane Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission,” said Naupada’s police inspector (crime) Hemant Sawant.

Police said Madhvi was an old resident of Thane and had a lot of land in his name. It could have been a dispute over a plot that may have led to his murder, police said. Officials said there were preliminary reports of Parab showing an interest in the plot, where he allegedly killed Madhvi.

The police, meanwhile, have formed three teams to nab Parab, including a team involving his colleagues from the crime branch. Parab reportedly served for 12 years at the Naupada police station and has been with the anti-extortion cell for the past three years.

Sources said Parab was also allegedly involved in a drunken brawl more than a decade ago.
