“We are constantly monitoring the weather systems. But right now, the wind strength is not strong,” said R.V. Sharma, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department. “It’s only when the winds reach 500 km can we determine the rain pattern. Even when it reaches, the wind gets dispersed to other areas.”

On Tuesday, except for some light rain and thunderstorm in the evening, the city was dry with humidity close to 90 per cent. The last 24 hours have seen barely any rain with no rain recorded for Santacruz while 33 mm in Colaba.

Chaos at airport

Two city-bound Jetlite flights from Kolkata and Nagpur aborted landing and circled above the airport for about 25 minutes because of bad weather and low visibility on Tuesday. At 7 pm the visibility at the airport dropped to 800 metres.

A Jet Airways flight to Aurangabad also had to return to the city airport due to bad weather.

An Air India Mumbai-Delhi-Shanghai flight, scheduled to leave at 7am on Tuesday, was suspended due to technical problem. The passengers were accommodated to a nearby hotel.
