Earthquake recorded off Mumbai's coast

As the country was put on tsunami alert following a high intensity earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday, an earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded 155km off the Mumbai coast.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the quake in the Arabian Sea was recorded at 12.31 pm.

"The epicentre was 155 km from the coast. The shock registered was at 18.6 degree latitude and 71.3 degree longitude in the Arabian sea," said VK Rajeev, director, western region, IMD. "But, there is no relation between the Indonesian earthquake and the one in the Arabian Sea. It's just a coincidence," Rajeev said.

Several Mumbaiites felt the tremors that originated in the Arabian Sea.

Shikha Tomar who was busy at her work desk felt her chair shake at her sixth floor Andheri office.

"Chairs and the exit sign hanging from the wall started shaking for around 10 seconds," said Tomar, who works with an insurance company at Andheri.
