The school was sent a show cause notice after which an education official visited it on Friday.

The school had claimed it was a private unaided minority institute and the RTE Act did not apply to it. But, according to Mantralaya officials, the schools stands on land that was given to a charitable trust at a concessional rate which in turn sub-leased it to Vibgyor High.

Schools that have received any concessions should keep open at least 50% of their seats and may need to follow the 25% quota, under RTE Act’s provisions.

A complaint was lodged with the state education department by ‘Desh Seva Samiti’, an NGO, on Thursday for not accepting the initial letters for admissions of around 40 students staying in slums in Goregaon-Malad.

Shim Mathew, the school’s principal, said: “As per RTE rules, the quota does not apply to us," he said.
