For the past four to five months the 36-year-old’s family had begun experiencing happiness again.

The family’s financial condition had recently started improving after Akbar’s eating joint Mezbaan in Kurla started doing good business.

“Life was improving and there was so much happiness coming our way,” said a relative who did not wish to be named while the family waited at Saifee Hospital, Marine Lines, where Akbar succumbed to his injuries. “But you never know when life does a somersault and every thing comes to an end.”

Relatives said that Akbar, who has a four-year-old daughter, had gone to south Mumbai for a meeting and was returning on his motorcycle when the incident occurred. The police stopped Akbar during naka bandi. This is when the accused, driving her Honda CRV, hit him.

When the police stopped Akbar’s motorbike, the pillion rider (name not known) got off and walked a few feet away to speak on his cell phone.

“He was a simple man and never interfered in other people’s business,” said a neighbour requesting anonymity.
