The Sahar police on Sunday arrested a person for posing as an official of the fictitious anti-corruption commission of Mumbai Police and trying to extort Rs 50,000 from a businessman.
The police said Sanjay Gaud, along with another associate, had approached the complainant, Sanjay Nayyar, a businessman dealing in curtains, at his godown in Andheri (East) on Friday. Claiming to be from the police, Gaud told Nayyar that the first floor of the godown had been constructed by violating civic regulations and demanded Rs 50,000.
“He presented himself as an anti-corruption officer and threatened to have the first floor of his godown demolished if he did not come up with the money. Nayyar asked him to come the next day,” said Assistant Inspector Shankar Yeram of Sahar police station.
After the duo went, Nayyar filed a complaint with the Sahar police station.
On Saturday, when the duo came back to collect the cash, a team of officials in casual clothes intercepted them.
“We managed to arrest Gaud. However, his associate, who had been suspicious about the set up, fled. On frisking Gaud, we found a card on him saying he was working for one Anti-Corruption Committee, a non-governmental organisation that works to eradicate corruption and is registered at Mira Road in Thane,” said Yeram.

{{/usCountry}}The police suspect that Gaud might have tried this trick to extort money from other people as well. Gaud has been remanded in police custody till Tuesday.
