Two Baluchi members of a gang were arrested for posing as police officials and stealing gold ornaments from women and senior citizens.
The police have so far detected 14 cases, involving jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh, registered against the duo.
The two men have been identified as Aslam Siraj Irani (24) and Javed Jaffery (25) — both residents of Indira Nagar slums in Kalyan.
Two other members of the gang — Haidar Ali Shaukat Raza (35), the alleged mastermind and Jabbu Pais (30) are absconding. All the men hail from Baluchistan.
The men made counterfeit identity cards portraying them as policemen.
The duo then stopped women and senior citizens claiming that a robbery or murder had taken place ahead and ask them to keep their ornaments in a handkerchief.
To lend authenticity to their claim, they would make a member of their gang posing as a passerby remove his ornaments in front of the victims.
“This helped them win the victims’ trust. The accused would fill the handkerchief with stones,” said Assistant Police Inspector Navnath Sonawane.
The police arrested Jaffery on June 17 who then led them to Irani who was arrested on September 3. The police have not recovered the stolen ornaments. The duo said that after committing the offence, they used to give the valuables to Raza who sold the ornaments to jewellery shop owners. For every case each member of the gang received Rs 5,000.
