“Around 9.30 am, I heard a commotion from the third floor, and called up the watchman who said people in flat 302 were not opening the door,” said Rushali Gala, a second floor resident.

The neighbours remember the Jains as religious and conservative. “We never heard them quarrel or shout. The mother-in-law helped with a lot of the chores. Monica shared a good rapport with her family,” said Kinjal Shah, another neighbour.

“She spoke to me every day. She told me she really liked a Diwali rangoli outside my flat, and asked me to make one for her as well,” said Ramya Sanyal, another resident. Dinesh came across as no-nonsense. “He never uttered a word even if we met in the corridor or lift,” Ramiya added.
