The proposal worth Rs 970 crores to rent compactors (specially built vehicles) to collect Mumbai’s garbage was again rejected by the standing committee on Wednesday.

The infighting between the standing committee of elected representatives and the administration has already led to refusal of the proposal (for fresh garbage collection contracts) in its current form, twice before.

The previous contract has already ended on May 31, 2012.

Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte through his special powers has allocated Rs50 lakh for temporary arrangement for garbage collection by existing contractors till the proposal gets cleared from the standing committee. However, this amount seems to be falling short with areas such Mulund, Bhandup and Ghatkopar already facing problem with garbage not being cleared regularly. If the situation persists, whole of Mumbai is likely to get affected by the end of the month. The situation may worsen once the monsoon starts. “We clearly see that these contractors do not work satisfactorily. Why then should we award them the contract?” said Pravin Chheda of Congress while explaining why there was opposition by the committee.
