Fees in govt medical colleges doubled

The state runs 14 medical (allopathy), three dental, four ayurvedic (16 granted), three Unani colleges and 50 other institutes that award degrees/diplomas in nursing, physiotherapy and paramedical courses.

“The state does not support any private allopathy college,” said medical education secretary Milind Mhaiskar.

The cost of education in state government colleges is very low compared to private institutes that have a considerable presence in the state.

A press statement said the government had revised the fee in 2003. “The fee was hiked because the existing charges were so low. The cost of running medical colleges and hospitals has increased manifold in recent years.”

In additional to the tuition fee, the government has introduced a development fee ranging between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5000 for these courses. The charge will, however, not be applicable to diplomas in pathology, nursery and paramedical science.
