Advocate Ayaz Khan, who appeared for the wife’s family, told the court that, in fact, Sharma had asked his wife to leave the house. “The court interviewed the woman who said she did not want to live with her husband,” said Khan.

In 2006, Sharma got engaged to Neelam, 19. But the relationship between the families soured.

Despite problems, they got married in 2008. In 2009, Manoj filed a non-cognisable complaint alleging that Neelam’s family, had forcibly entered his house and took his wife.

In January, he filed a private complaint before the Kurla metropolitan magistrate’s court seeking action against the family.
