The FIR has been registered at the Azad Maidan police station.

HT had first reported the matter in its April 14 edition, about an internal inquiry being conducted by deputy commissioner of police, protection and security, HK Varaich, into the complaint that the police had received against Mahabole.

Police said after the inquiry, a report was sent to joint commissioner of police (law and order) and, given the seriousness of the offence, the probe was handed over to the crime branch, which will conduct its own investigation.

Police officers said the victim had alleged that the ACP, presently posted in a side branch, had visited her residence (in Vinoba Bhave Nagar) almost eight months ago. Her husband was not at home at the time. The ACP allegedly offered her sweets and she fell unconscious after consuming it.

Sources said though the petrified woman refused to make a written complaint, apprehending fear to her life, the inquiry was immediately ordered as part of the recent decree by the Mumbai police administration to curb instances of indiscipline and moral turpitude by policemen with iron hand.

Mahabole had come under the scanner after allegations against him in a high-profile murder case after which he was transferred out of the crime branch. However, nothing was substantiated against him in that case.
