Coming down heavily on the civic solid waste management department, the fire brigade has, in the report, asked the civic body to take immediate steps to secure the dumping ground from anti-social elements.

“The contractor concerned failed to tackle the fire as soon as it erupted. We have informed the solid waste management department that they must ensure the contractors have a strong firefighting system and that adequate patrolling is done to prevent a small fire into turning a major one,” said Sunil Nesrikar, chief fire officer, Mumbai fire brigade.

The report has also stated that all staff must be trained to tackle natural fire caused by methane gas. Fire officials added such instances are likely to reoccur, considering the poor management at the dumping ground.

The civic body had also filed an FIR about the incident.
