Following huge pressure on the state government to act against those responsible for the increasing number of female foeticide cases, the public health department has decided to speed up the process of taking action against the guilty doctors.

“Some of the decisions we took to tackle foeticide and the plunging sex ratio are providing legal help for speeding up cases and pushing for appeal, a one-window system to strengthen communication between government and Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), and a monthly meeting for follow ups,” said Suresh Shetty, health minister, after his meeting with members of MMC, Indian Medical Associ-ation (IMA) and representatives of radiology, homeopathy and ayurvedic associations.
“We sat with the associations and have tried to plug loopholes that have prevented action against doctors. The chief secretary will speak to the chief justice to set up fast track courts in the state to deal with these cases,” he added.
