A six-month-old foetus was found in a drainage duct in Mitra Mandal lane in the Khotwadi area of Santacruz (West) Santacruz on Monday. This is the sixth incident of its kind in the last four months.

According to Arun Chavan, senior inspector at Santacruz police station, “Someone left the foetus in the drain and covered it with the lid. The lid, however, did not fit in properly. A woman spotted the foetus through the gap and notified us,” he added.
The foetus was sent to Cooper hospital for examination and a case was registered against an unidentified person under section 315 (act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code.
An officer from Santacruz police station said, “Since the age of the foetus was past the permissible time for abortion, we suspect it could be a case of unwanted pregnancy. Someone would have tried to abort it illegally and discard it this way. We looking out for the accused.”
Abortions are illegal after the 20th week of pregnancy.
