Found near public toilet, day-old girl bitten by rats

On Monday, a passerby spotted the newborn girl near a public toilet in Ghatkopar (West) and informed locals who, in turn, alerted the police around 7.30 am.

“The baby was alive,” said Inspector SB Sable of the Ghatkopar police station.

“She was kept near a garbage dump behind a public toilet in Kajolekar society,” added Sable.

The police took the infant to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, from where it was shifted to Sion Hospital.

“She seems to be bitten by rodents on the left leg. Besides that, the baby is not suffering from any ailment,” said Sable.

The police have charged the baby’s unidentified mother with a case of abandoning a newborn and further inquiries are being made.

“We have taken down statements of several local residents but nobody has any information about the child’s parents,” said Inspector Uttam Kolekar of Ghatkopar police station.

“We will inquire with every household to check if there were any recent deliveries and would also investigate with unmarried couples, as the baby could be born out of wedlock.”
