On Tuesday evening, a speeding dumper truck knocked down a 23-year-old pedestrian at Chembur.

At 7 pm, Raman Matih and his friends Rajan John (24) and Sandeep Rajsharma (25) were walking down Gidwani Marg when the dumper truck driver lost control of his vehicle and knocked down Matih.

Passersby caught the driver, Soyal Sheikh (24), and handed him over to the police.

Matih was rushed to Sion hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. Rajsharma, who sustained injuries on his eye, head and hips, is recuperating at Sion hospital.

Based on John's complaint, the police arrested Sheikh and charged him rash and dangerous driving and causing death by negligence.

Five hours later, the Borivli police arrested businessman Yogesh Wyas (60) for allegedly mowing down two women on Devidas Road. At 12.15 am, labourers Sonabai Vankhede (60) and Vimlabai Borkar (53) were allegedly run down by Yogesh Wyas's speeding car. The duo was rushed to nearby Bhagwati hospital.

Borkar, who sustained serious head injuries, was declared brought dead to hospital, while Vankhede, who suffered injuries on her legs, died while being treated.

Six hours later, another case of rash driving was registered at the Sewri police station.

A 23-year-old mathadi worker was crushed under the wheels of a speeding truck on Mesont Road.

Govind Valkhande (23) was transporting sugarcane on his bullock cart when a truck hit the cart from behind.

“Govind was declared dead on arrival by the doctors at JJ Hospital,” said Assistant Police Inspector V.D. Kirwe.

One bull died on the spot, while the other sustained injuries. A local veterinarian is treating the injured bull.

The truck driver, Raju Bhandare (30), was arrested and charged with causing death by negligence.
