Fugitive don Santosh Shetty, 48, who made headlines following the murder of criminal lawyer Shahid Azmi in February 2010 was deported from Thailand on Friday morning.

Fugitive don Santosh Shetty, 48, who made headlines following the murder of criminal lawyer Shahid Azmi in February 2010 was deported from Thailand on Friday morning.Shetty, travelling on a fake passport issued against an assumed name, was booked under the passport act and remanded to police custody till August 17.

Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy said, “The task was done by adhering to proper legal procedure in close cooperation with the Bangkok police.”

Roy who had interrogated Shetty following his deportation said: “He claims he had ordained Azmi’s murder as he (Azmi) preferred to represent one of the accused in the November 26, 2008 Mumbai attack case.”

Belonging to an affluent family, Shetty went to a posh South Mumbai School, completed his graduation and followed it up with a diploma in Hotel Management. The lure of big money drove him to join the league of the narcotic/gold syndicate. A couple of years later when police were hot on his tracks Shetty quietly slipped to Dubai where he came across fugitive underworld don Chhota Rajan, who later became his mentor.

The two parted ways when Shetty thought his writ in Rajan’s gang was diminishing, said ATS officials.

Some policemen, former and present, suspect that Rajan could have played a role in Shetty’s arrest.
