Garbage dumping stalled at Deonar for two days

As a result of this, trucks have been stranded at the spot without being unloaded. The problem multiplied when there was a fire on the site on Thursday.

Raising the issue and demanding an immediate resolution of the issue, leader of the house and Shiv Sena corporator, Sunil Prabhu, said: “Trucks have been stuck inside the dumping ground since the past two days. Spreading of fire has made matters worse. Why

was there no alternative arrangement made for the collection of waste? The administration needs to take account of this.”

Deonar, which is a largely residential area, houses the city’s largest dumping ground that collects more than 4000 tonnes of waste everyday.

Devidas Borse, corporator from M East ward, said: “Unresolved issues between contractors have been creating persistent problems for local residents. The administration should take responsibility for this”.

The civic administration, meanwhile, said that a contingency plan was in plan. Mohan Adtani, additional municipal commissioner, said: “The contractor and the sub-contractors had some payment issues because of which work had stopped. However, we have negotiated between the contractorsand garbage has started to be offloaded again. We have ensured that some garbage is diverted to the Mulund dumping ground. We will step up the collection of garbage on Thursday night and ensure that the situation returns back to normalcy by Friday evening.”
