All the three RTOs will be functioning with 50 per cent of staff strength because the rest of its employees will be undergoing training for the census that starts on May 1.

This will mean a limited number of windows will be open at the RTOs making the process a little more tedious. And this time, even ‘agents’ outside RTOs will not be able to help much because most windows that accept applications for licences will be closed. With Saturday and Sunday being holidays, the queues on Monday are expected to be longer than usual. Of the 106 employees at Andheri RTO, 50 will be out for training. At the Wadala RTO, only two head clerks of 62 employees will be working.

“There will not be too many problems from May 1 because it will be enough if employees give one hour for the census,” said V. Pandkar, RTO officer, Wadala.

Each of these RTOs receive and clear at least 800 applications for driving licenses, learning and permanent day.

Once the census is done, every citizen above the age of 15 will be given this card. Employees from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will also be roped in for the exercise, which will continue until June 15.
