The Home Ministry has decided to set up two forensic labs in the state — one in Pune and the other in Aurangabad districts.

This move initiated by Home Minister R.R. Patil on Tuesday comes after the department realised that there are 23,000 backlog cases in the six forensic science labs in the state.

“Considering the rise in the number of cases in the courts that require forensic evidence, the existing labs are falling short. In 2009, the state had over 1.06 lakh cases that came to labs,” said an official, who attended the review meet on the functioning of the State Forensic Science Laboratories.
