Although the reason for the step is yet unknown, the police suspect that the young couples were feeling guilty about having run away from their villages probably due to opposition from their respective families.

A missing complaint was filed by the families of the two women, Lalita Kosare, 19, wife of Hiralal Sahu, 22, and Tulsi Tande, wife of Lakhoj Kurre, at Rajim police station on February 5.

The two couples had been in a relationship since their school days. They had been staying together in a small room comprising a hall, bedroom and kitchen in Ovala village for the past 25 days, the police said.

The police, however, are wondering what drove the couples to kill themselves. They found empty beer cans and food ordered from outside. A suicide note left behind also did not say anything.

Police officials said a clear picture would emerge only after the women's families arrived.
