Though the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has three years to complete the extension from Andheri to Goregaon, it’s all set to complete a major part of the project in one-and-a-half years.

The MRVC has called tenders for installing, testing and commissioning of signalling equipment and complete work of trenching, laying cables and overhead wires on the Andheri-Goregaon Harbour line section for Rs 6.2 crore.

“This is a significant step in completing the extension of Harbour line beyond Andheri. However, before starting this work, we will have to demolish a couple of buildings at Andheri and procure land at some places for laying tracks,” said P.C. Sehgal, managing director, MRVC.

The MRVC plans to extend platforms 6 and 7 at Andheri at the Goregaon end. It will also have to procure land at some places at Goregaon and Jogeshwari and demolish several structures — foot overbridges, a Government Railway Police building, water tank, transformers and parking stand and rail sheds —coming on the way.

The MRVC has already levelled the land for laying tracks, built boundary walls and barricaded it with tin sheets.

The Rs 100-crore extension project is part of the Rs 5,300-crore MUTP-II that is expected to be complete by 2014.
