HC declines relief to Ramesh Sippy

In a setback to film-maker Ramesh Sippy, the Bombay high court on Wednesday dismissed his appeal against an interim order of a single judge, refusing to appoint a court receiver for a flat in Altamount Road, which has become a matter of dispute between the film-maker and his brother Suresh.

The court also declined to grant him an order seeking Suresh to pay him interim compensation. A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Nitin Kamdhar observed that the court was not inclined to grant relief at this stage.

Ramesh Sippy had moved the court against his brother, claiming ownership of the 2,500 square feet flat, worth almost Rs20 crore.

The court was told that the dispute between the brothers started after the mother's death two years ago.

While Ramesh has alleged that Suresh and his sons have been occupying the flat illegally, Suresh contended that the flat was transferred in his name by adjusting his rights in Sippy Films, after he left the partnership firm in 1975.

The flat had been originally purchased by filmmaker GP Sippy, in 1971. He died in 2007.
