On Friday, the Bombay High Court issued a contempt notice to jail superintendent S.W. Khatavkar for not shifting a convict suffering from cancer to Mumbai for treatment.

The division bench of Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice U.D. Salvi also asked Khatavkar to remain present in court on September 13.

Moreover, Khatavkar will have to pay for the journey from and to Pune from his own pocket because the court has restrained him from claiming any travel reimbursement.

Shalini Yadav, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Nashik district in 2002, has been diagnosed with cancer.

Earlier this year, the high court had granted her temporary bail for treatment.

In July, she moved a fresh application seeking extension of the bail period.

However, instead of extending the bail period the court, on July 6, asked her to surrender.

The court also directed the jail authorities to take her to Mumbai for treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital.

Irked, the bench issued a show-cause notice to Khatavkar seeking an explanation as to why proceedings for contempt of court should not be initiated against him.
