The Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused an appeal to stay the publishing of Hariprasad Chaurasia’s biography.
While hearing a defamation suit filed by Pandit Hariprasad’s sons – Vinayprasad and Ajayprasad – Justice AV Mohta refused to stay the publishing of “Wood, Winds of Change” in other languages.
The book was released on Pandit Hariprasad’s 70th birthday - July 1, 2008.
The HC has asked Pandit Hariprasad and author Surjit Singh to file their reply in six weeks.
Vinay and Ajay filed the suit in 2009 raising objection to the biography referring to Pandit Hariprasad’s two marriages.
Pandit Hariprasad has been married twice. He has two sons from Kamala – Vinay and Ajay. He has one son from Angurbala – Rajeev.
The sons have objected to the chapter, which states that the flautist first married Angurbala.
According to the suit, if that version is to be believed then Vinay and Ajay would become his illegitimate children. The two sons claimed damages of Rs 1 lakh.
The author’s counsel, Arindam Banerjee, said the book was written with consent.
Mahesh Menon, counsel for Vinay and Ajay, argued that Pandit Hariprasad first married Kamala in 1957 and then Angurbala in 1962. Menon added that they would challenge this order at the SC.
