The Bombay high court on Monday refused to postpone the upcoming Mira-Bhayander municipal elections on account of Ramzan and Shravan.
A petition moved by a trust, Mira Bhayander Jagruti Sanstha, sought the postponement since 40% to 45% voters in the region belong to the Muslim community, while the rest are Hindu Maharashtrians and Gujaratis. The petition states that fasting during Ramzan started on July 21 and will continue till August 20, while Shravan began on July 20 and will continue till August 20.
The trust had written to the assistant election commissioner seeking to declare elections after Ramzan, but it replied saying that the election programme is declared by the returning officer, and in any case, the polls have to be completed on or before August 12.
Following this, the petitioners approached the high court, which dismissed it saying that this cannot be a ground for postponing elections.
