On Wednesday evening, the surgeon was running a temperature and was looking forward to going home and resting. Gvalani, head of the surgery department at KEM Hospital and also works at Hurkisondas Hospital, left work at 7pm to go home and relax.

But just as he reached the gate of the hospital, Gvalani saw a mob rushing towards the hospital carrying bleeding victims.

“I forgot about my fever and rushed to help the critical patients,” said Gvalani.

The patients were first segregated on the basis of their type of injury.

The critical patients who required immediate surgery were taken for a CT scan and taken to the operation theatres.

“I conducted five surgeries including complicated ones on the same night which went on until 4am,” said the surgeon.

His ribs were fractured and then his lungs collapsed.

After going home and sleeping for just two hours, Gvalani reported to Harkisondas at 8am and later went to the KEM Hospital for a detailed update of each blast victim in the hospital.

“The 36 hours were tough, but it is the call of duty,” said the surgeon.
