For Mohammed Ajmeri (29), who was released on bail after spending over four and half months in custody, the freedom was far from rejoicing.

His wife of eight years divorced him earlier this month after losing hopes of his release.

Ajmeri, an autorickshaw driver, had been arrested as a suspect in the first two cases of Nehru Nagar minor rape and murder cases in the first week of March.

However, he was released on bail after the investigators failed to file a charge sheet within 90 days.

“I was eager to come out of the judicial custody and see my beloved wife and other family members. But my wife, after losing all hope of my release, divorced me on July 7,” said Ajmeri, sitting alone in his one-room shanty at Raisabi chawl of Nehru Nagar in Kurla.

He added, “After being released, when I called her, with the hope of getting her back, I was told that she has remarried and I should not call her again. That was the end of my joy of freedom and all my dreams have been shattered.”

“I will not marry again. No one can take Farah’s place in my life,” said Ajmeri, a school dropout.

“On the day the girl went missing, I was in the Nehru Nagar police station in connection with some other case against me. How can a man be at two different places at the same time?” he asked.
