The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has now asked the railway authorities to submit a revised plan for the modernisation of CST, declared a world heritage site by the Unesco.

As per the Unesco norms, no development beyond basic landscaping can be carried out in the entire premise of the station.The MHCC is worried that the construction involved in the revamp would not fit into the guidelines.

“We are concerned about the height of the towers proposed on the P D’Mello side of the station,” said a committee member requesting anonymity. According to officials, railway authorities are planning to ask the Unesco to dilute the guidelines to accommodate the project, tipped to cost about Rs3,600 crore. Until then, the panel is not in a position to clear the existing plan.
